My response to Vickie ...
Hi Vickie -
While I am a CHL holder it took me many many years to reach a maturity and confidence level where I felt that it would be of a benefit to me. And it is not, by any means, the "be all end all" of self protection nor is it for everyone. It takes a commitment to education, time at the gun range and a mindset all its own.
Before going the taser route ... which needs a similar amount of skill of handling and mindset as a handgun except the attacker must be closer and if you watch any of the cop shows the attackers don't always stay down ... please look into self defense classes.
I am sorry that I cannot offer any particular places to look but these need not be a full blown commitment to say a martial art. When I was fresh out of college many moons ago I found a self defense class offered at a community college that gave a female basic tactics to avoid potentially dangerous situations as well as basic methods of protecting oneself ... how to break a grip, areas to cause pain on your attacker to make him let go (the average criminal will leave when shown resistance). There were also scenarios with guns and knives which many times mean compliance, i.e. giving them your purse, but you need to know what to do if that escalates into "get in the car".
The best thing that any of us can do ... no matter what the method ... is to learn to defend ourselves. Otherwise we are part of the problem.
Good luck with finidng what works for you ...
